Federation is fighting for the just causes of the small and medium newspapers in getting them relief from various quarters.Federation is pleading the Govt. of India and the state Governments for increase in advertisement rates and quantum of advertisements. There are many complaints of Editors and Journalists for harassment by various quarters and we help them in getting justice.

The Federation is organizing seminars, symposia for public awareness and also for the awareness of the Journalists. State bodies are also organizing conferences, seminars etc., from time to time to keep the Journalist fraternity united. Needless to mention that small and medium newspapers is an effective medium, which reaches to small villages, towns and educates and informs the people in correct perspective. The Federation has undertaken various important tasks in its hands and important among them are:

  • Status of industry should be given to the newspaper industry
  • Setting up of Small and Medium Newspapers Development Corporation
  • Banks should provide loans to small and medium newspapers at nominal interest rates
  • Public Sector undertaking should allocate advertisement funds for small and medium newspapers.
  • Govt. of India should release advertisement to small and medium newspapers to the tune of 75% of its advertisements budget.

There are many feathers in the cap of Federation. We were on the forefront in fight against Defamation Bills, which was introduced during Rajiv Gandhi’s time and we pleaded before the seven Minister’s Committee, appointed by Shri Rajiv Gandhi and the Bill was withdrawn. We fought against the newsprint quota system and during Narasimha Rao’s time the control was lifted from the newsprint and today newsprint is freely available and can be imported. It was the effort of the Federation that rules of the accreditation were relaxed and accreditation is open for publication, having circulation of 5,000 copies, whether it is daily, weekly or fortnightly. Government takes Federation into confidence and consults while taking major decisions. Recently, Government has increased 30% rates of advertisements and the Federation was party to the dialogue on the issue.
